Gold Property Developments is commissioning a permanent public artwork as part of the new build Coombe Farm housing scheme for the benefit of residents and visitors of the new residential development. The site was previously a dairy farm and is located in Saltdean, a coastal village to the east of Brighton and Hove.

The commission

This will be a permanent commission and the panel is open to proposals in any medium but is looking for an innovative solution which will augment the landscaping or public realm with a creative artistic input which responds to the curatorial concept.

The intent is for the artist to investigate the opportunity to bring in moments of joy, reflection and contemplation by encouraging residents to immerse themselves within the site and spend time in an environment that offers a connection to the surroundings. Since at least half of the dwellings will house families, the artist should take into account the multi-generational use of the site giving consideration to proposals that are inclusive and provide interest to all ages and abilities.

The landscape design is fixed, so this is an opportunity to add to it, but there is no prescribed approach or outcomes with the exception that water features, fountains and light based work are not possible.

The successful artist will be required to manage the design, fabrication, and installation of the artwork.

We welcome applications from artists/designers working in all disciplines, though given the nature of this opportunity previous experience of the following is desirable:

• working at scale with materials
• working in the public realm
• experience of managing the fabrication and installation process / working with fabricators
