An Action Plan for the Visual Arts in Brighton & Hove

Presenting a 360-degree view of the city’s renowned visual arts sector with a clear route map for addressing needs and opportunities for growth.

Cultural Associates Oxford (CAO) have been commissioned to oversee this analysis of visual arts in the city.

Aim: To deliver a robust analysis of the whole visual arts sector in Brighton & Hove and produce an action plan to address gaps and support growth in the future.  This is a high priority for artists, audiences, cultural organisations, Brighton & Hove City Council and Arts Council England.

Approach:

The work will include 2 parts:

  1. Understanding and revealing the breadth of the visual arts ecosystem and identifying needs and gaps
  2. Developing bold and ambitious partnership opportunities to drive the sector forward

The work will draw on a broad range of knowledge and expertise, captured through an inclusive research methodology which welcomes diverse contributions.

The analysis will reflect the current picture and set out a joint future direction for the sector.

What we will deliver:

A report that provides a clear analysis of the city’s visual arts sector, highlighting gaps and key opportunities, and providing case studies and inspiration. The report will set out recommendations for next steps and practical ways forward.

How the report will be used:

The report will be used to focus on key priorities for sector growth and help make the case for future ambitious cross sector collaborations and interventions with a wide range of partners and stakeholders that will help to deliver on the city/region’s vision.

It will advocate for and guide the future development of the visual arts sector in Brighton & Hove.

Future models and initiatives will be identified for sustaining and growing the visual arts and will help shape a 10-year action plan for development, putting visual culture and creativity at the heart of the vision for Brighton & Hove.

The Visual Arts Analysis is co-funded by Arts Council England, Brighton & Hove City Council and the Brighton & Hove Culture Alliance in collaboration with Brighton & Hove Visual Arts Coalition (BVAC).
