As part of Brighton & Hove’s commitment to being an anti-racist city, we are interested in responses to this creative grant funding that give voice to the hidden and unseen stories of the city, within three themes:

    1. Knowledge: Shedding light and perspective on the histories of the transatlantic slave trade in Brighton & Hove
    2. Courage: Opening up conversations and sharing creative opportunities for communities in Brighton & Hove
    3. Humanity: Enabling our shared history of the City to be told through new perspectives that engage with communities. This can be through any form – for example activities, exhibitions or digital presentations.

Applications should explain how the project addresses all three themes, although projects may prioritise one in their design and delivery.

Your project may be mainly focused on Knowledge, for example, but the application should still detail the project’s additional engagement with Courage and Humanity.

What kind of projects are eligible?

We are interested in hearing from you to tell us what you would like to do. Your project can be any scale, from small and discreet to large and highly visible. It can be a part of a conversation you want to continue or be the opportunity to start a new one.

We ask that you tell us how your creative project will respond to the themes and tell us the impact your project will have for the communities involved and those who may experience it.

What is the criteria for the grants?

Please tell us:

  • How your creative project responds to the themes of the grant – Knowledge, Courage and Humanity
  • Who your project engages and how it will engage with communities in Brighton & Hove
  • What impact you hope that this project will have on the communities you will seek to work with.
Who can apply?

This programme is open to:

  • Black and racially minoritised-led organisations based in Brighton & Hove
  • Black and racially minoritised creatives based in Brighton & Hove who are working in partnership with an organisation of their choice

Given the theme is to respond to the histories and legacies of slavery in Brighton and Hove we are particularly keen to hear from Black-led organisations and Black creatives, as Black communities were overwhelmingly affected by the transatlantic slave trade. Black is defined as people of African and Caribbean heritage.

Background

This funding comes from Brighton & Hove City Council as part of the Arts Development team’s work on anti-racism.

The programme is being managed by the Brighton & Hove Culture Alliance, the successor group to the ABCD Cultural Recovery Programme.  The purpose of the Brighton & Hove Culture Alliance is to maximise the power of collaboration to achieve strategic ambitions and create more, and more equitable, opportunities across the creative & cultural sector in Brighton & Hove.

An Anti-Racism working group has been convened to design the grant programme and distribute the funding.  More detail, including the members of the working group, can be found here on the Culture in Our City website.

FAQs

Q: Can a Black or racially-minoritised artist or individual work with an organisation that is not led by Black or racially-minoritised people?
