Public Art Opportunity 2 – Valley Gardens Phase 3

Organisation: Brighton & Hove City Council
Deadline: 11/09/26

As part of the City Council’s creation of a new public space through the Valley Gardens scheme, new utility cabinets have been installed to support community and events use at the Old Steine.

As these cabinets are at risk of unsightly tagging, we are delighted to be able to offer two opportunities to local artists to design and paint these cabinets.

This approach aligns with our strategy of supporting high-quality murals and street art as a preventative measure for tagging and reflects the importance of Brighton & Hove’s artists and wider creative community.

Artists are invited to submit an expression of interest for the following opportunity.

Commission 2 – 2 x Utility Cabinets

Location: South of the Old Steine

Artworks should occupy external sides of each cabinet to provide an attractive addition to the public space whilst also deterring tagging.

Preferred themes for proposed artworks

  • Imagery reflecting its proximity to the Pier (e.g. starling murmuration)
  • Imagery reflecting the seaside location (e.g. waves, beach life)
  • Local history and the civic identity of Brighton & Hove (e.g. Pride)

All artworks should be appropriate to a public space used by a wide range of communities and demographics as well as visitors to the city.

Fees & Process

An artist fee of £1000 is available for this commission, to include all materials and labour. Artworks will be in place for 24 months, after which time they will be reviewed.

Artists are invited to submit an expression of interest to Arts@brighton-hove.gov.uk by 11/09/26 clearly outlining their concept and ability to deliver the proposal in less than 250 words, and by including a sketch or graphic representation of the artwork to be produced.

The artist awarded the commission will be selected by Brighton & Hove City Councillors and officers and notified by email in September 2026.

Arrangements for painting the artworks will then be made directly with the Valley Gardens project team.
