Marlborough Production’s Queer Heritage South programme are hiring a freelance Web Developer to support in the Development phase of the newly announced ‘Live Archive’ project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. ‘Live Archive’ will work towards creating a new and inclusive digital archive for the city, future-proofing LGBTQIA+ collecting in Brighton & Hove, animating the archive through cultural events, and finally delivering a major exhibition in 2027.

Web Developer Role Brief – Stage One
Marlborough Productions (www.marlboroughproductions.org.uk) has been awarded NLHF funding to deliver an LGBTQIA+ Heritage Project across the city. The project will comprise a Development Phase – one year (covered by this brief) – and a Delivery Phase – three years (subject to Round 2 NLHF funding).
The project will be developing a new strategy for the conservation and sharing of LGBTQ+ heritage in Brighton & Hove, and developing our community digital archive (www.queerheritagesouth.co.uk). This will include a programme of volunteer training, skills development, organisational development and partnership building, the delivery of community-led cultural programmes, and a public exhibition across Brighton & Hove Museum, Jubilee Square and Library, University of Sussex, and University of Brighton.
As part of the Development Phase we are looking for a web developer to work on our digital archive, restructuring both the back-end and user facing elements of the website.
 
Overall Goal
  • Create a website for the new Brighton LGBTQ+ Heritage project
  • Possible migration of our site to a WordPress from the current CMS
 
 
Infrastructure
  • Researching and provisioning the web server to host the new website
  • Work with us to develop a simple Content Management System for memberships, donations, and archival deposits
  • Consider affordability and maintenance of the website for the future
  • Liaise with Research Software Engineer at University of Sussex to support with Figshare integration and server (for this knowledge of LAMP stack, PHP + SQL, python or bash favourable)
  • Provide basic training for website maintenance
 
Visual design
  • Work with our Designer and support on all aspects of web design
  • Collaborate with us to create the branding for the new project
 
UX and Community Consultation
  • Consult on digital archive and user experience
  • Work with Community Archivist and Community Champions to embed suggested changes and themes into the archive
  • Work with the existing Queer in Brighton archive to best catalogue and showcase digital materials
  • Consider the UX of the website ensuring that information about where to deposit LGBTQ+ heritage materials is clearly signposted
  • Contribute creative ideas to develop a website that showcases digitals in engaging and dynamic ways
 
Fee:
  • £10,000 + VAT (value for money will be assessed during the selection process). Additional phases of the project have separate budget allocations for the ongoing development of the website  – the approximate value of the contract is £20,000
