Space in the City

The Culture in Our City website is due to be activated from the Autumn as a destination for sharing rehearsal spaces, resources and studio access and we would love all venue-based arts organisations to think about the spaces and resources they might be able to share with creatives in the City.

One of the priorities identified by the ABCD Cultural Recovery Plan is the need to share information about the resources available to creatives in Brighton & Hove, particularly rehearsal, performance and studio spaces.
For a great starting point you can visit the Brighton Fringe listings.

There are two different lists for rehearsal spaces and venues
Increasingly invaluable are the spaces in the City which offer free hire.

Set up by Brighton Artists Network members, Open Venues is an initiative encouraging venue-based arts and cultural organisations to provide their spaces free of charge to local artists for meetings, rehearsals and other professional and creative development opportunities. Participating venues donate time-slots available in between existing bookings and programmed activities, which can be booked by artists via Brighton Artists Network. The initiative has been running since August 2020 and is currently taking place at Fabrica and Brighton Dome. So far it has provided 130 hours of R&D time to 70 artists including dancers, theatre-makers, writers and visual artists.

Brighton Artists Network’s long-term vision is to expand Open Venues to four more venues in Brighton and develop its scope to create a network of venues jointly supporting artist development and creative production in the City. This July they are running three consultations with visual and performing artists and are welcoming contributions

Theatre Makers – 7 July, 1 pm: Open Venues – Theatre
Dancers – 14 July, 1 pm: Open Venues – Dancers
Visual Artists – 21 July, 1 pm: Open Venues – Visual Artists

To find out more about the initiative, visit Brighton Artists Network

Finally, Brighton CCA’s project space at Dorset Place is also being offered free of charge with curatorial, marketing and limited technical support. Dorset Place hosts a series of short projects and exhibitions by emerging artists, organisations, curators and students. It aims to be an exciting platform for experimentation, collaboration and engagement with new ideas and voices. For more information visit Brighton CCA.

Finally, Blast Theory are open for applications for artist residencies at their studio in Portslade.  Deadline Monday 5th July, so don’t miss out.  Blast Theory – Apply for Residency
