Alternative Tours of Brighton & Hove

Through this project Sussex Dance Network hope to bring people back together, strengthen local connections and champion a truer representation of the Culture in our City.

A celebration of the rich culture in our city, told through the voices of our community.

A programme of Alternative Tours of Brighton & Hove have been developed by Sussex Dance Network, as part of the ABCD Plan for Cultural Recovery. The project engages local artists, organisations and community members to share perspectives of the city that often go untold. Combining movement, visual art and performance – the tours invite members of the wider public to engage with these stories to explore their surroundings in a new way.

Cultural recovery is essential for the Arts & Culture sector as a whole to regenerate and survive; an inclusive approach to growth and opportunity is vital to ensure that no voices are left behind. Through this project Sussex Dance Network hope to bring people back together, strengthen local connections and champion a truer representation of the Culture in our City.

A bit about the tours:

Through the Senses explores smell, touch and hearing as a means to navigate, understand, be excited, and be enraptured by the city. The tour is curated by visually impaired artist Ebony Rose Dark in collaboration with Brighton’s visually impaired community, and is open to anyone identifying as visually impaired and looking to deepen their relationship with the city. Companions are welcome.

Free Your Map explores the City through the eyes and art of people who use wheelchairs. Discover hidden spaces, hear artists’ stories, and discuss what makes Brighton and Hove both architecturally rich and occasionally challenging. With video, sound and installation along the way.

The tour is for people of all ages open to different ways of looking at the urban landscape. A collaboration between artist Ram Samocha of Draw to Perform, the makers of Enayball (a new tool that makes drawing accessible to people who use wheelchairs) and eight participant artists.

Trails of Migration engages members of the refugee, asylum seeker and migrant communities in Brighton in a series of creative workshops combining dance, storytelling, and reflection. Together, on the tour, we’ll explore experiences of Brighton from a different point of view. Drawing on the workshops, participants will collectively create an immersive performance event, inviting audience members to be guided on a personal and alternative tour of Brighton.

Voices of Motherhood tells diverse and marginalised stories of motherhood — through the words and voices of those who have lived them. Voices of Motherhood is a unique performance trail, curated by verbatim theatre-maker Angela El-Zeind in collaboration with communities across Brighton. The tour is open to people of all ages and experiences who are interested in exploring new places and perspectives.

The tours are free to attend, but booking is required as spaces are limited.

Tickets will be available soon, keep an eye on the Sussex Dance Network website for updates.
